While they may be small, short films sure are mighty. And on National Short Film Day (Dec. 28) we celebrate the ingenuity of this media and how it continues to influence the entertainment world.
In fact, you may have seen short films in the past during annual awards shows or through the occasional Disney clip, but do you know how this type of film got started? Their background is incredibly interesting &mdash; check it out!
<h2>The History of Short Films</h2>

National Short Film Day is relatively new, having been established in 2019 by the Film Movement, but the history of short films began a long time ago. They were first shown in a public setting in 1895 in Paris, France by the Lumiere brothers. They presented ten short films to an audience at the Grand Caf&eacute;, where each film was approximately 50 seconds long and still managed to intrigue the crowd in attendance. This has since been seen as the start of the motion picture industry.
At the beginning of the short film journey, these pictures were mainly action shots comprising of a single scene. As the years went on, moviemakers became more proficient in building on the initial short film guidelines by adding different sequences, and so this media type expanded. Short films that initially began as action shots evolved into comedy films, romance films, and more. And around 1910, short films were increased in length to about 10 minutes in some cases.
However, somewhere during the 1920s into the 1930s, short films became less common as the length of movies increased. It wasn&rsquo;t until the 1980s where short films made a noticeable comeback. And today, short films are quite prevalent in production as their own separate genre. In fact, many national awards shows have a specific category dedicated to short films and the individuals who make them.
<h2>How Short Films Influenced the Movie Industry</h2>

With the help of the Lumiere brothers in Paris, the movie industry was underway. Short films were the beginning of the film industry and helped put moviemaking into motion. In the beginning, short films were easy to make as there was no editing involved and many of the films consisted of one scene. As people in the film industry became more comfortable with short film production, additional factors arose, such as editing capabilities, expansion of film genres, and additional cast and production crew members.
And thus, the movie industry was born!

It&rsquo;s time for some real talk. The holidays are a busy, busy time. Between shopping, wrapping, cooking, visiting, driving, cleaning, stuffing, and everything else, it&rsquo;s easy to get overwhelmed.
There&rsquo;s one thing you really don&rsquo;t want to have to worry about during the holidays, however: electrical mishaps. Especially with everybody being busy and running around like reindeer in a snow storm, there are a lot of chances for things to go wrong.

Chances are you are going to be plugging in more and more electronics over the holidays, whether it&rsquo;s that tree, holiday lights, or a brand new 4K television that you just picked out from your favorite local electronics store.
No matter what you buy, you are going to need places to plug everything in! Most houses aren&rsquo;t going to be equipped with nearly enough outlets to manage everything at once, which leads a lot of people to shortcuts like extension cables and multi-outlet surge protectors.
Those are all fine and dandy, but you want to make sure you aren&rsquo;t creating a problem with all those cords. The biggest thing is to make sure that you aren&rsquo;t plugging surge protectors or extension cables into one another and <a href="http://www.safebee.com/home/guide-power-strips-and-surge-protectors">potentially overloading anything.</a>

<h2>Battery Bounties </h2>
There&rsquo;s nothing worse than having a kid open a brand new electronic only to find that it needs batteries.
Before you wrap up all of the presents this year, make sure to check if any of them use batteries. Many probably won&rsquo;t have batteries included, and some might even need weird sizes that you won&rsquo;t usually have sitting around in the house.
If you really wanted to go the extra mile, wrap up the batteries and give them to your kids first. They won&rsquo;t know what they go to, and you&rsquo;ll be able to stretch out the surprise a little bit longer!

Don&rsquo;t put your new electronics in the snow, no matter what they are. Just don&rsquo;t do it. Don&rsquo;t stick your tongue to the flag pole, either.

New video game systems are common presents, but a lot of parents might not know that these systems often need to be plugged in and connected to the internet to get all set up and ready to go.
To make matters even worse, download and update servers tend to get swamped on big days, so your kids could spend their holidays watching an update meter slowly crawl forward instead of actually using their new system. To avoid this, get sneaky and creative: Get the console set up early and get all the updates downloaded, and then put it back in the box and wrap it. Problem solved!
