What is voice control?

by Ronald Elias

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Well, actually, with voice control, now you can.

As your local electronics store, all of us here feel that it is our duty to make sure that our customers are updated on the latest trends in technology and electronics. We don't want you to be left behind in the busy shuffle and constant advancements of the tech world, so we see part of our job as making sure we keep everybody informed and on the up and up.

This week, we're going to focus our attention on voice control. What is it? How does it work? Will it make your life easier? And how will it actually work when implemented in your day-to-day life? Let's take some time to dive into this to topic and see what it really is all about.

What is voice control?

First, there were buttons. And then electronic companies said, "Let there be easier control!" and thus, voice control was born and ushered in an era unlike anything anybody in the entire world had seen before.

OK, it may not have gone exactly like that, but you get the idea. Voice control is a method of controlling a device -- whether it's a TV, refrigerator, or smart home system -- using only audible, voice commands. Look ma, no hands!

You are probably used to voice control on devices like your phones -- be it Siri or Google Assistant -- but voice control can also be used for a lot of bigger appliances and home systems, as well.

And what does it do? Voice control adds a whole new dimension of easy control to your favorite devices. If you want to set a reminder on your phone but don't want to pick it up and input it yourself, a simple voice command can handle that for you. Want to turn on your TV? Or maybe control your smart home's lights and shades? All of these can easily be accomplished with voice control.

How do I use voice control?

It may seem a big magical -- and a bit intimating -- but using voice control is actually really easy. Many devices have an "always listening" mode, which, if left on, will let you say a simple command such as "OK Google" to engage the device so you can tell it what you want it to do.

Of course, then you have to decide what it is that you want your voice command to do. Add items to your shopping list, check traffic, or even play and control the volume of music from your favorite streaming services -- there are myriad ways that you can incorporate voice control into your daily life.

And what if you really want to get fancy? Voice commands can help you start off your day by going through your calendar, telling you what weather to prepare for, or even help you pick out a restaurant for dinner later that evening. And all of that is done easily and hands free, giving you space to keep the rest of your morning routine uninterrupted.

Other Benefits of Voice Control

That's not all that voice control can do, however. Sure, these starter voice control options are great, but what if there were other, more complex things you wanted to use voice control for?

Sure thing, there are options! You can make phone calls, or even create your own commands using IFTTT (If this, then that). These custom commands can make a huge difference in bringing together the various devices within your home, and they can really open up the possibilities of what you can accomplish with voice control!

Being able to control your entire smart home without having to get up, move around, or use physical controls has long been a dream, but now it is very much a reality. If you are looking for new and innovative ways to control the electronics in your home, give us a call or stop by today! We'd be glad to go over all the voice control options that could work for you, and help you upgrade to an easier and more convenient voice-controlled lifestyle.
