How to Set Up the Perfect Sports Den

by Dale Dauterive

1. That Big Screen

Since the dawn of time immemorial, there has always been one thing that every sports den needs: A big, big screen. A BIG screen. If you are going to suffer through staying home and watching the game instead of actually being there, then you need to do it on the biggest -- and best looking -- screen possible.

What does that mean for 2019? A 4K set, for starters. Don’t even bring up anything below that or we’ll start handing red cards out. And of course, the size is going to depend on how much space you are able to carve out for your sports den.

Super Special Pro Tip: The answer is as much space as you can get away with.

2. Surround Sound

Whether you are sitting courtside or in the nosebleed seats of the stadium, part of being at a game is getting to hear the roar of the crowd all around you. Everybody cheering and stomping and clapping at the same time -- it’s just part of that live sports magic.

If you want to recreate that same sensation at home, you are going to need a surround sound system. And a subwoofer. Start with those, and keep adding speakers and increasing their size until your neighbors yell at you to turn it down. That’s when you’ll know you’ve added enough.

3. Something to Get Your Game On

Let’s face it -- you aren’t going to be just watching sports every second of every day -- you’ll want to take some time to play some sports ... or at least digital versions of those sports.

Grab a few of your favorite gaming systems and bring them over to the new den. Even better, now you’ll always have a place to game without having to fight over who in the family is using the TV at any given moment.

4. Decorations

Jerseys on the wall. Neon light fixtures. A pool table.  Pennants. Flags. Pictures of you and your family at recent games. Go all out with decorating your space. To really make your sports den feel like home, you need to bring out the small details that will really make it feel like yours -- and those are up to you to flesh out as you express your own sports story visually in your decor.

5. Everything Else

What else could a sports den possibly need? Well, you are going to want a cooler. And comfortable furniture, probably a recliner at least. And don’t forget about seating that can fit your whole family, so you all can gather around the set for game day.

Once we’ve helped you with the big electronics, we’re leaving the rest up to you. And we know you’ll score a decorating home run … or touch down ... or basket … or, well, you get the point.
