MicroLED Explained: How It Works and Its Distinct Features

So, what is MicroLEd? Exactly what it sounds! Each pixel in your screen is illuminated by a tiny (micro!) LED light which provides dazzling brightness and crisp, lively colors. This technology doesn’t require a backlight like the others do, so it’s more energy-efficient and lets screens be incredibly thick and flexible.

And to top it all off, these micro LED lights are incredibly durable! They’re less likely to wear out!

MicroLED vs. Everything Else

If MicroLED is so advanced, how does it stack up against the cutting-edge tech of OLED and QLED? Excellent question. And while the answer can get quite in-depth, this breakdown should clear things up:

  • LED technology uses a backlight to produce an image but has limited black levels and color contrast.
  • OLED technology allows each pixel to produce its own light, resulting in perfect black levels, excellent color, and near-perfect off-angle viewing. But sometimes the brightness is limited, and they can be prone to burn-in.
  • QLED uses quantum dot technology to provide better brightness and color accuracy (but isn’t as flexible as OLED is) and is more resilient to burn-in.
  • MicroLED is an emissive display technology that doesn’t rely on organic compounds, making for a brighter display and a slimmer TV that isn’t prone to burn-in. But the resolution is greatly diminished in larger sizes 70 inches and up.

Each display tech is capable of high resolution, like 4K displays, but the quality of the brightness, contrast, color, and black depth varies!

At the moment, this technology is facing significant manufacturing challenges. Creating and assembling the mini-LEDs into large, high-resolution displays is technically demanding and expensive. So, the tech is currently limited to those that can afford it. Whether or not we’ll see more in the future depends on if (and when!) this tech can be reproduced on a much more affordable scale.
