It’s time to get those ears in gear.
Wireless earbuds are really exploding in popularity, giving people a chance to enjoy listening to music without having to be physically tethered to their phones. That’s initially a great convenience, but at what cost?
Especially as people work from home and look for ways to listen to music, meetings, or podcasts without disturbing everyone around them, more and more people are asking about wireless earbuds. We thought we’d take time on the blog this week to look into whether wireless earbuds are worth it, and what they can bring to your music experience.
No Strings to Hold You Down
The first -- and probably most obvious -- benefit of wireless earbuds is that you don’t have to mess with cables. Instead of plugging your earbuds into your phone or computer, you can simply connect your wireless earbuds to your favorite device -- wirelessly.
For many people who exercise, this is worth the price of admission all by itself -- as long as you aren’t one of those people who worry that without a headphone wire, your phone will keep falling out of your pocket during workouts. Either way, like we said, for most people, just the added convenience of not having wires is good enough reason to have a pair of wireless earbuds around.
Battery Life
The freedom of wireless earbuds doesn’t come without some associated costs, however. First of them is the battery life: Wired headphones draw their power from your device, but wireless earbuds rely on internal batteries.
The good news is that these batteries are rechargeable and you don’t have to worry about switching them in and out -- and most earbuds these days come with charging cases that can help you recharge your earbuds on the go.
Still, battery life can be a concern, and the manufacturer-estimated average of three- to five-hour battery life is probably longer than what you will actually get. This isn’t enough to get most people through a workday, which does mean you’ll need to keep that charging case handy.
How’s the Fit?
This is another popular concern that comes up when people are looking for wireless earbuds -- will they be comfortable?
Unlike higher-quality headphones that go over your ears, earbuds are usually stuck inside your ears, and not all of them are going to fit or be as comfortable as others. We recommend trying out a pair before buying. It’s also important to remember that they have to be comfortable in your ears for hours at a time, not just a few minutes!

Sound Quality
Sound quality is another consideration when shopping for earbuds when looking at earbuds. Unlike massive over-the-ear headphones, earbuds have to cram a lot of tech into a little space, and that does come at the cost of playback quality.
The good news is that wireless earbuds have continued to improve, and as long as you don’t go for the bottom-of-the-barrel models, you will get pretty decent sound quality out of most modern earbuds.
But at the end of the day, are wireless earbuds worth it? In most instances the answer is yes -- wireless earbuds provide a convenient and easy-to-use solution that most music listeners will find totally acceptable. If you are into hi-fi audio, though, you might want to consider other options.
