If you caught our beginner’s guide on surround sound last month, you’ve already taken the first step toward sound superiority. But now that you want to upgrade to surround sound speakers, you need to decide which speakers the stork will bring home for you … or which ones you’ll buy from us, because that’s probably actually where speakers come from.
But don’t worry! We haven’t guided you this far down the path only to abandon you! We always want to do what we can to help our customers make the best purchasing decisions for themselves. So we put this guide together to help you decide which surround sound speakers are best for you. Listen in and check out what you should keep in mind when speaker shopping.
Decision 1: Speaker Count
When it comes to speakers, one really is the loneliest number. Surround sound speakers come in different arrangements – such as 5.1 or 7.1 – with the first number being the number of speakers that it comes with, and the .1 as the subwoofer.
As for how many you want, that is mostly going to come down to how much room you have. Is there enough space in your living room for five speakers, let alone seven? Speakers do come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, but if the idea of just finding space for five is already stressing you out, then you probably don’t want to complicate things by adding in two more.
If size isn’t a factor and you still aren’t sure how many to go with, stick with the classic 5.1 set up. It’s a great place to start. Or if you really don’t want to make the decisions yourself, stop in today and we’ll be glad to further go over what speaker options would work best for your specific needs!
Decision 2: Wired vs. Wireless
This speaker debate often can come to more of a personal preference than a technical one. Wireless speakers tend to have lower quality, but that gap is closing and most people probably won’t be able to tell the difference between the two kinds.
What it really comes down to is the wires. If you don’t want to have wires running around your living room, wireless speakers are going to make you much happier. If you have a giant space, you’ll probably want to consider wireless too, as it means you won’t have to worry about the wires being too short.
But, if you are worried about sound quality and don’t mind having to hide a few wires on the ceiling or under carpets, go with a wired set and don’t look back.
Decision 3: Price
Another factor you’ll want to consider before you go out speaker shopping is how much you are hoping to spend. Like any tech worth having, there’s a range of affordable, high quality, and luxury speakers all available, so you’ll want to have a budget in mind. Setting a budget can help narrow down the field of possible options, as well.
