Tips on Choosing the Right Outdoor TV

by Product Specialist

TV viewing has begun to spill over into backyards when there is a shortage of space indoors. It seems like the perfect solution when you have several guests that want to watch the big game. So, does it make more sense to purchase a new weatherproof TV or check out a TV enclosure?

The Pros and Cons

Weather Considerations

A TV enclosure acts like a shield to protect a TV from weather conditions outdoors. This durable shield is designed with a type of polyethylene, which is the same type of plastic building material used in playground equipment. A number of companies make weatherproof TVs, which are typically constructed of powder-coated steel and anodized aluminum. They also contain built-in control systems for monitoring operating temperatures.

Installation

Typically, an outdoor enclosure may weigh just 60 pounds. These probably won't require heavy duty equipment to mount to walls. On the other hand, outdoor weatherproof TVs are heavy because they must contain extra cooling equipment and additional ventilation. An average TV of this type may weigh in the neighborhood of 70 pounds and require special heavy duty mounting equipment for attaching it to walls.

Performance

TV enclosures can be purchased with anti-glare options. However, radiation and heat from the sun inside the enclosure seem to affect the quality of the picture. Lifting the shield may improve the quality somewhat but may result in more glare on the screen. When comparing the two TV options, the weatherproof TV with UV-coated glass and anti-reflective layers seems to be the winner by providing a high quality, clear picture on sunny days.

Cost

TVs designed for outdoor use can be expensive. And not just the television itself, but you will have to factor in additional options such as cooling equipment and mounting. For instance, a 42-inch TV may be cheaper than that 84-inch you have your eyes on. The best option may come down to affordability.
